Best Movie World Cup 2

Post by SveinR »

It's been five years since the Best Movie World Cup was held, where the Mopolauta users sought to find the best movie ever made, voted on in a cup system. Last year we did a sequel of sorts, the Best Movie of the 00's World Cup. Now, however, the time has come for the 'true' sequel (or reboot, if you will): Best Movie World Cup 2!

If you are unfamiliar with how this works you can see the two previous World Cup topics linked above. This time we will have a pool of between 96 and 128 movies (the final number to be decided after suggestions have been made) from which to create our cup system. Last time we did this we ended up with 96 (even though the original plan was 80), but I think we can feasibly do 128 if required. Which movies that will end up facing each other in each round will be chosen by random.

As before, 50 of the movies will simply be taken from the current top 50 of the IMDb Top 250 list (this top 50 is posted further down in this post, and is the list we will use even if the IMDb list changes during the next week). To reiterate the main reasons behind this:
1. To have a base of movies that are generally accepted to be among the best ever.
2. To have movies from every decade since the '30s.
3. To have movies in a wide variety of genres.
4. A great number of these movies would probably have been suggested by you anyway, so instead of you going with "the obvious choices", you can give it some more thought.

When deciding which of your suggestions to include I will also try to focus on diversity in directors, genres, decades and the like. The "reigning champion" is Forrest Gump, which would also be automatically included if not for the fact that it is in the top 50 list.

I'll give you about a week to suggest candidates in this thread, and then I'll make the first round consisting of 50 movies off IMDb and between 46-78 movies suggested by you. Keep in mind that there is no use suggesting movies already in the top 50 list posted below. Also, please include an IMDb link to the movie you are suggesting, so I know exactly what movie you mean. For instance, if you were to just suggest "Scarface", I couldn't know if you meant the 1932 original or the 1983 remake.

This is how the voting rounds will go (ongoing round in bold):

Round 1: 144 movies, 72 pairs
Round 2: 72 movies, 36 pairs
Round 3: 36 movies, 18 pairs
Round 4: 18 movies, 9 pairs
Intermediate round 1: Cut one of the movies from the competition
Round 5: 8 movies, 4 pairs
Round 6: 4 movies, 2 pairs
Final: 2 movies, one pair
Winner decided!

The King's Speech
Titanic
Inglourious Basterds
Cinema Paradiso
The Artist
The Green Mile
The Orphanage
Up in the Air

I'm basically in love with the first 6 of those. Prioritize those when considering my suggestions.

My girlfriend suggested Black Swan and Avatar, I better suggest them too :)

i'm here just to protest against choosing any movies.... wtf wtf wtf how one movie can be better than another? it's still same shit... i dont want to insult you guys but it's just some guys saying some learned by heart shit and all this on a color screen and you are just sitting and what and staring at it oh come on plz... and you can watch a movie daily or even few a day? how is that possible dont you vomit or just laugh at the whole thing of those men an women at screen during some imagined shit situations? for me it would be completely enough to read 3-5 sentences about what happened in a film and thats simply it, what to waste 2 hours for? even if you have completely nothing to do, it's crazy it's just CRAZY ! CRAZY! i doubt i watch any movie in 2012 or 2011, maybe 2 movies in 2010, but that was just because of girlfriend and i was just accompanying, thinking about something COMPLETELY ELSE.... please guys someone tell, say, explain or just link me to an article where i can get knowledge what's going on in this world that ppl almost everyone LOL watches and even is PROUD, LOL of sitting against some screen

of course please dont get me wrong i totally support Svein and his devotion, but what the hell these movies what the fucking hell, guys?

Logically thinking, Berh has a point. Movies are fucking stupid, but we find some of them enjoyable and that's not going to change. Enjoyment doesn't have to be based on reason.

I can't sit through an average movie. I'll start laughing at poor acting or cliché plot lines, or just sit there in pain until I can't stand it. So I stopped watching random movies. I'll find a well-rated movie about a specific subject I'm interested in, and start watching. If the first 15 minutes are nice, I'll watch the rest. You're free to judge all movies by the ones you've randomly seen, but there are always better ones.

Heimat - Eine deutsche Chronik (1984)
Die zweite Heimat - Chronik einer Jugend (1992)

I've seen heimat 3 too many times aswell, but I think these two deserve a spot in the top 100, as they have the first spot in my top list. Watching this is quite a task, so I don't really expect this to get nominated, eventhough a lot of you would enjoy pieces of these films I think.

One thing to discuss before starting, I think, is wether you should vote in pairs where you have only seen one of the movies. There was a bit of talk about this in earlier cups from what I remember, but no conclusion made. I know it's impossible to police but still. As I see it there's arguments for doing it either way. Of course the main reason for such rule would be that it will be more about which movie is best compared to the other, rather than which movie most people have seen. But there are also bad things like: There might be very few pairs where you are able to vote, you might have deliberately choosen not to watch a movie because you know you wouldn't like it, etc.

So yeah not that I really have a clear opinion on this, just thought it should be talked about before the start, because I remember it being an issue that was talked about last times.

I think it should be more up to the individual voter - worst case scenario if everyone follows this rule could be that a movie almost nobody has seen ends up as the winner - just because nobody could vote against it. But I would advise people not to vote against a movie they haven't seen unless they think the other movie in the pair is fantastic.

Just an update on this so people don't think I have forgotten all about it!

First off, sorry for taking much longer than I originally said I would. That being said, the first round will start quite soon. I would first like some feedback on the issue of the total number of movies. I had originally planned to have a total of 128 movies, but I can increase this if needed. There were a total of 145 unique user suggestions, meaning that to get at the total number of 128 I would need to cut 67 of these suggested movies. I have considered increasing to 144 movies, which would result in the following voting scheme:

Round 1: 144 movies, 72 pairs
Round 2: 72 movies, 36 pairs
Round 3: 36 movies, 18 pairs
Round 4: 18 movies, 9 pairs
Intermediate round 1: Cut one of the 9 movies
Round 5: 8 movies, 4 pairs
Round 6: 4 movies, 2 pairs
Final: 2 movies, one pair
Winner decided!

Thoughts? Increasing to 144 would obviously increase the amount of suggested movies included, thus making my job easier and leaving less people disappointed, but it would also increase the ratio of modern/old movies in the final list (because a significantly higher amount of suggested movies are from newer times: almost as many from the 00s alone as from all the years preceding).

Edit: I have compiled the full lists of both variants.

The final list of 144 movies has been made. The tally of movies per decade is as follows:

1920s: 1 movie
1930s: 2 movies
1940s: 6 movies
1950s: 12 movies
1960s: 6 movies
1970s: 13 movies
1980s: 16 movies
1990s: 30 movies
2000s: 45 movies
2010s: 13 movies

The reason for there being so many movies from the latter decades here, is none other than that you suggested by far most movies from those decades. The 46 user suggested movies have all been assembled from the suggestions in this thread.
In making the list, I've taken into consideration the decade the movie was made in (so that if there are few movies from that decade in the list, then that movie will be included), the director (so that one director doesn't have an abundance of movies in the list), the genre (for variety), etc.
