Designer: tej

Breakthrough: tej (designer)

Easily a fitting candidate for both. Amazing levels with high effort visuals and innovative tool use. I've liked every single battle by him!

Two of the best levs so far this year imo:

Semi final jbl v SvR v Andr by Hosp
- Lev from the elma [heavyweight champion] title that was really memorable, really felt like I had found 'the style' here, and just had slower run than the others. Was very surprised to see all in top4 at least had completely different styles, other fast styles pos to. Need to see AndrY style too, I remember he had some clever style, don't remember it exactly though.

Top 4 ballerecs:
1. jblaze 00:34,36
2. iltsu 00:35,02
3. Bjenn 00:35,54
4. danitah 00:36,81

Harbtl75 Easy short normal lev by Haruhi
- Such a clever lev, at first try it looked like a lev that's hard to do much under 1min, but there is really cool hidden route that makes the lev half as long. I feel like there was so much left unexperienced in that lev, like you could make a pretty big levelpack just moving stuff around and be able to create lots of great levs. Also visuals were pretty great here.

Level: Savvy376 by Savvy

Had some time to think about why I liked this battle so much now.

Elma level designing has a bunch of simple paths you can take to make enjoyable levels for a variety of different reasons - sometimes it's nice to have a really smooth, highly tested route where the moves make a bunch of sense and the level is just nice to vruum. Sometimes, a level will have challenging styles to reward good driving or creative routes. Sometimes even just visuals can make a lev nice to play in battle. I guess the point I'm making is that there is no one "key" to making good levels, for battle or otherwise.

That said, I do think that there's some components that give a level a really great chance to make a great battle

- Variance in difficulty: It's not going to make a fantastic battle if 50% of people can't beat the lev, and likewise if 50% of people are just hoylaing for 0.01 improves. Usually, great battles give good drivers the option to implement timesavers and tricks to make their time faster and reward their good driving, but has options available for the less experienced kuskis to still post times and improve their own times. With this criteria at its best, every kuski should have the opportunity to post a time and to have legitimate options to optimise and improve their time with timesavers at their own skill level.
- Multistyles: This is kinda a hard criteria to define, as it's okay for hoylas and some gimmicky levs to not do this, but generally a level is better if there are multiple routes or paths you can take. I tend to find this is actually really simple to do - when you spot a potential path during design phase, rather than closing it off, facilitate it and make it engaging or challenging in its own unique way if its too fast.
- Clean: This might just be personal preference, but levels with lots of polys that aren't clean to drive on, provide some vsyncy shit or generally make the level far less smooth to drive aren't very great in awesome levs - they have their place, and for certain level types or ideas they're very appropriate.

---

So now to this savvy lev

I think that this lev ticks all of the above boxes in that it had many ways to improve your route or time, scaling from mega ez to mega hard. There's plenty of paths to take, and none of them are really so slow that they clearly aren't worth taking, and the lev was really clean to drive - there's no point at which you think "man that apple is too far up", "that vertex really in the way" "that poly super annoying position".

But beyond that, I think it has a fundamental concept that we don't see so often anymore - it has a (really simple) key motif throughout the lev with the polygon design. In this lev, pretty much all of the hangs have a big non-hangable triangle on one end. This is such a simple thing, but IMO guides the design and play of this level so well.

Battle was 40 mins, and I played 34 mins of it, and would have been perfectly happy to play another 40. There's a bunch of really hard but rewarding styles to try and overall there's nowhere in this level that isn't fun to drive.

Dont agree

Ofc they are obvious because its one of the awards, but there will be more than 10 wrs and suggestion topic is to show the jury which ones ppl really want in final top 5 (or how it works)

And ofc the jury discusses this and so. But its not obvious which new wr(s) is (are) the best.

Obv 05 wr is really really insane and needs to be mentioned.

If it really was that obvious why do we even have the category?

I do believe best web page were removed as a category because it was obvious, moposite(lauta)/EOLsite...

Best wr is not obvious. Gosh

I can say from my brief experience that suggestions regarding WRs are completely unnecessary, because all WRs will be discussed by the jury anyway.
Ramone wrote: 6 Jun 2018, 10:32suggestion topic is to show the jury which ones ppl really want in final top 5
The purpose of this topic is not to make sure that something is nominated, but to make sure that nothing is missed or forgotten by the jury while the nominations are being selected. WRs will never be forgotten, because we'll look at every single one anyway. With all due respect, Arsenic suggesting the Uphill WR here makes it neither more or less likely to be nominated. Or anyone else, for that matter.

So if someone mentions a designer here for example, more mentions are unnecessary and don't make it more likely they get nominated?

The # of mentions of a designer or level or w/e in this thread will be totalled up come GAA preparations time, so when nominees are chosen, jury will see "oh tej was nominated for designer by two mans, and ramone by 9 mans". Obviously, this has an impact on the decision making process.

That said, usually people/levels who get nominated many times in this thread are those same people who weren't likely to be missed anyway.

As a former member of GAA jury, I can confirm what Pawq wrote: every WR is considered by jury and mentioning it here won't, most likely, increase its chances to be nominated. It's partly because years with 30+ new WRs are most likely over, as you can see from the table below, and most WRs will be in the top10 anyways.

Code: Select all

2010: 43 New WRs - 18 New WR Tables
2011: 35 New WRs - 17 New WR Tables
2012: 42 New WRs - 16 New WR Tables
2013: 17 New WRs - 10 New WR Tables
2014: 35 New WRs - 08 New WR Tables
2015: 13 New WRs - 05 New WR Tables
2016: 12 New WRs - 04 New WR Tables
2017: 07 New WRs - 05 New WR Tables
With designer category, and categories alike (lev, rec, style, ...), it is a bit different story. Read Haruhi's post above :)

But, as pawq said, the main purpose of this topic is that nothing is forgotten by jury members when they choose top10, which is not the case for WRs.

The tallying up of amount of suggestions is more something we do in the other topic that's made closer to the awards, where people make their formal suggestions. This one is meant more in the way that pawq mentioned, to make sure we don't forget something that happens earlier on the year.

Re: GAA suggestions thread 2018

Time for another long-form suggestion from me :)

I was thinking about this suggestion a bit the other night and have just gone through all the GAA nominations in the last decade to confirm my suspicions. When I think about who the real pillars of the community are, there's a couple of standout names to me. Obviously, Kopaka is the man that most people here would choose as the most contributing person, and has definitely been a leader and a role model for years. Mawane springs to mind too, because of his attitude and the role he put himself in within the community. Both of these people had been nominated time and time again for "Community" or "Contribution" awards, and except for nick-o-matic winning a few for FEM organisation, they've mostly gone to Kopaka.

Aside from a contribution nomination for his role in WCup organisation, there have been no nominations at all in those categories for Markku, and this just blows my mind. Markku is (for me at least) such a sage member of the community and certainly (alongside Kopa) someone I would consider a leader for our scene. I've always considered him a role model too, for at least the last 10 years.

Since I became more active around the time of GAA 2017, I noticed that Markku was significantly more social in the community than I remembered (maybe because I was never much of an IRC person), and it made me aware of how much other kuskis respect him too. I knew this, but I've never heard ANYONE in this community have a bad word to say about Markku, nor have I seen Markku show anything but kindness and respect for anyone and everyone else. In my mind, especially given our recent discussions about how the community's negativity and respect levels needed adjusting, I see Markku as someone to look up to; and a person who leads by example.

This contribution by itself is worthy of a nomination, I think, however I'd also like to bring up the decade of GAA jury that Markku has contributed, as well as the 15+ years of being a leader and role model in the elma community. Of course, Markku also has a hand in improving or otherwise contributing to countless other community efforts. Even contests where Markku destroys everyone like the 8x8FF are made better just by his being involved.

Even if this nomination doesn't extend to an official one, thanks Markku for all that you've done for this community over the years.

TL;DR:

Markku for the contribution apple award; for his contributions as a role model and leader in the community for over 15 years and for his countless other contributions to the elma scene and golden apple awards.
