My votes:

Group 17
The Town 1p: Enjoyed this - I don't get why some people dislike Ben Affleck
The Social Network
Arrival 2p: I thought this was fantastic - truly unique and moving science fiction
Jodaeiye Nader az Simin / A Separation
The Dark Tower

Group 18
Incendies
Silver Linings Playbook 1p: Loved this movie, truly enjoyable
Koe no katachi / A Silent Voice
Ford v Ferrari
Saul fia / Son of Saul 2p: Watching this movie is a horrible experience. The most realistically gruesome depiction of Auschwitz I have ever seen. Everyone should watch this movie once - I promise you won't ever want to watch it again.

Group 19
Isle of Dogs
Super 8
La La Land 2p
Coherence
Gravity 1p

Group 20
Moneyball 1p: Enjoyed this a lot - also a movie I have shown repeatedly to maths students - statistics ftw!
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2p: It's very difficult to judge two so very different movies as this and Intouchables. Could easily have scored them differently. Great movie.
The Tree of Life
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens Have watched this obviously - Star Wars is always a fun spectacle, but in this group it falls short
Intouchables 3p: Absolutely wonderful!

Group 21
The Lobster
Zero Dark Thirty
Relatos salvajes / Wild Tales 2p: Brilliantly twisted dark humor - you need to watch this movie! Actually discovered this at a foreign film festival in 2014 :) Really hope this one goes through to next round!
Fyre
Kick-Ass 1p

Group 22
Avengers: Endgame
The Dark Knight Rises 1p: Maybe the weakest of the Dark Knight trilogy? Still very good
Django Unchained 2p: Tarantino at his best
Dangal
Kaze tachinu / The Wind Rises I love love love Miyazaki, but for some reason haven't watched this yet :(

Group 23
Super
Blade Runner 2049 1p: I think maybe the best part about this was that the futuristic city seemed so vibrant, like it could actually be a real place
Her
Inception 2p: Should really watch this one again
Snowden

Group 24
The King's Speech 1p
Swiss Army Man
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) 2p
American Sniper

Group 25
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Rush
The Revenant 1p
Searching for Sugar Man
Ted 2

Group 26
The Square
They Shall Not Grow Old 2p: Great documentary on the First World War, brilliantly using actual footage with added colouring and sound
Upgrade
The Lego Movie
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 1p

Group 27
Logan
SuperFly
Avengers: Infinity War
Room
Frozen 1p: Yes, I am a fan of Frozen :)

Group 28
22 Jump Street
Pitch Perfect
Warrior
Take Shelter
Mad Max: Fury Road 1p: I think this just might be the best action movie I have seen - it's so over-the-top, with everything turned up to 11, so shouldn't really work - but somehow it does, brilliantly!

Group 29
Argo
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Jagten / The Hunt
Spotlight
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker This is the only one I've seen of these - don't really want to give it points as I suspect the other movies are much better. I think there were some strange creative choices in this one...

Group 30
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 1p: A playful Coen-brothers take on the Western genre :)
Knight and Day
Veronica Mars
The Hunger Games 2p: Difficult, because Busters Scruggs is great - but I love the Hunger Games movies :) Don't really know which of them I think is the best.

Group 31
Particle Fever 3p: An absolutely wonderful, moving documentary about particle physics and the search for the Higgs boson - but even more so, it is about the scientists themselves. I feel it really captures the essence of what it means to be a scientist.
Jojo Rabbit
Interstellar 1p: Maybe this deserves a higher score - as someone who has studied astrophysics and cosmology it's jawdropping to view the black hole and wormhole as how they actually would appear - not to mention the spectacular effects of general relativity it shows. Every year I show this to my physics students - there's a lot of interesting physics to discuss here, not only with regards to general relativity. If you're interested in learning more about the science behind what's showed in the movie, I thoroughly recommend this talk by Kip Thorne - the Nobel prize winning physicist and probably the foremost expert on general relativity in the world, who was the science consultant on the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM-N0tbwBB4
Coco 2p: One of Pixar's best - truly brilliant scenes from the Land of the Dead. Could just as well have given this 3p.
Mud

Group 32
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Mother! 3p: A truly intense movie experience - some of the scenes from this movie still gives me chills thinking about them
TRON: Legacy 1p
Zimna wojna / Cold War 2p: A gorgeous movie
I Melt With You
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

I know it must seem hard to believe, but not really.

Ty for the recommendation, will spy! It's definitely one of my favourite movies ever, and the science behind it is absolutely fascinating!

CUP ROUND 1
64 movies, 32 pairs.

The pairings are random.

Note: You do not have to vote in every pair, or in every round.
The voting lasts through Sunday 15th November, 23:59 CET (GMT+1). If you post your votes after the deadline, they may still be included, as long as I haven't yet posted the results.

What to do if you have only seen one movie in the pair? It's all up to you, of course, but personally I think the best choice then is to not vote unless you think the movie is absolutely fantastic - in that case I would probably vote :)

Top 3 movies across both group stages that received the highest number of points of those that did not go through:
13p: Shutter Island
12p: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
10p: The Grand Budapest Hotel
10p: Kimi no na wa. / Your Name.
10p: The Artist

Movies that received more than one 3-pointers, but did no go through:
Safety Not Guaranteed
Hereditary
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Shutter Island
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Mother!
Damn, should've had some safety net to catch great films that happened to be in imba groups. Based on the above, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Shutter Island and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World should've ez gotten in :(

Rush is a nice movie imo but still quite generic and "safe" in its storytelling (of real events and characters). Whiplash has more edge and feels a lot more raw.

Oh, and I already nominate Palm Springs to the Best Movie of the 20's World Cup!

CUP ROUND 2
32 movies, 16 pairs.

The pairings are random.

Note: You do not have to vote in every pair, or in every round.
The voting lasts through Thursday 19th November, 23:59 CET (GMT+1).

The Dark Knight Rises VS Zero Dark Thirty Really difficult decision. DK Rises managed to make Batman interesting and it's a great cinema experience while ZDT is well-made but a bit tough to sit through. But it's by a hair!
The Help VS Django Unchained
In Time VS Interstellar
The Hateful Eight VS Gravity
Room VS Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
The Martian VS 21 Jump Street
Joker VS Ex Machina Haven't seen Ex Machina but Joker is good enough to get my vote anyway.
Drive VS Inception
Spotlight VS Edge of Tomorrow
The Wolf of Wall Street VS Jagten / The Hunt Tough one.
Inside Out VS Whiplash
Arrival VS Boyhood
Intouchables VS The King's Speech
The Big Short VS Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Gisaengchung / Parasite VS Ford v Ferrari

The Dark Knight Rises VS Zero Dark Thirty Seen both long enough ago to not really know which I like more, but got Zero rated 9 and Dark Knight rated 8
The Help VS Django Unchained
In Time VS Interstellar rip In Time :D
The Hateful Eight VS Gravity Dame, I might look like a Tarantino hater here :X Both h8ful8 and dżango very good, but not his best in my book, and in this case both losing to 9s
Room VS Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
The Martian VS 21 Jump Street
Joker VS Ex Machina Having to make a choice here is fucking painful. So much so that I'm tempted not to vote at all. But fuck it, Alicia shall be the decider :>
Drive VS Inception
Spotlight VS Edge of Tomorrow
The Wolf of Wall Street VS Jagten / The Hunt
Inside Out VS Whiplash This one also mega painful for me, since both were fucking mindblowingly good. But I go for Inside Out because of its incredible depth and because Pixar fanboi
Arrival VS Boyhood
Intouchables VS The King's Speech
The Big Short VS Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Gisaengchung / Parasite VS Ford v Ferrari
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) VS The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Only unseen In Time and 21 Jump Street, but I feel like voting against them are quite safe bets here :)

My votes - too many pairs where I've only seen one :/

The Dark Knight Rises VS Zero Dark Thirty
The Help VS Django Unchained
In Time VS Interstellar
The Hateful Eight VS Gravity
Room VS Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
The Martian VS 21 Jump Street
Joker VS Ex Machina Joker is great but Ex Machina is truly spectacular and one of the best movies I've seen the past decade. Incredibly powerful and captivating.
Drive VS Inception hard.. but kinda been too long since i saw Drive
Spotlight VS Edge of Tomorrow
The Wolf of Wall Street VS Jagten / The Hunt
Inside Out VS Whiplash oof, hard..... both fantastic :/
Arrival VS Boyhood
Intouchables VS The King's Speech
The Big Short VS Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The Dark Knight Rises VS Zero Dark Thirty
The Help VS Django Unchained
In Time VS Interstellar - I am glad In Time made it this far, but Interstellar is superb in pretty much every aspect here
The Hateful Eight VS Gravity - damn, I need to watch Gravity
Room VS Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
The Martian VS 21 Jump Street
Joker VS Ex Machina - toughest choice of this round. Ex Machina was quite interesting, but Joker wins it for me
Drive VS Inception - as cool as Drive is, there's now way it is better than Inception
Spotlight VS Edge of Tomorrow
The Wolf of Wall Street VS Jagten / The Hunt - Jagten seems like a really cool movie, gotta watch it soon too. But I hope Wolf wins.
Inside Out VS Whiplash
Arrival VS Boyhood
Intouchables VS The King's Speech
The Big Short VS Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - both of these films are kinda forgetable for me. The Big Short's plot is closer to my interests
Gisaengchung / Parasite VS Ford v Ferrari - Parasite is just so damn original that even movie as good as Ford vs Ferrari stands no chance
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) VS The Perks of Being a Wallflower - I might need to watch Birdman if it wins, because it has to be real good to beat The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I liked the suspense of Ex Machina, it's like a psychological thriller and you know something's going wrong. The idea is simple, unique and close to my own interests. I like movies where the premise/setting is limited (like Phone Booth and Buried) and the suspense and plot is built through dialogue and little things.

I could ask the same question about The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I rented it just to be able to vote the pair and thought well that was 4 euros wasted since Birdman is so much better and I didn't get the appeal at all. Not bad but just a bit boring. In some way it reminded me of The Way Way Back which was a lot better too.

RESULTS: CUP ROUND 2

The Dark Knight Rises 6 VS 2 Zero Dark Thirty
The Help 2 VS 6 Django Unchained
In Time 0 VS 11 Interstellar
The Hateful Eight 3 VS 5 Gravity
Room 4 VS 3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
The Martian 6 VS 2 21 Jump Street
Joker 4 VS 6 Ex Machina
Drive 3 VS 8 Inception
Spotlight 4 VS 2 Edge of Tomorrow
The Wolf of Wall Street 4 VS 3 Jagten / The Hunt

The Big Short 4 VS 3 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Gisaengchung / Parasite 7 VS 1 Ford v Ferrari
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) 4 VS 2 The Perks of Being a Wallflower

A few stats:
Half of the movies now left in the competition are from 2014 or 2015!
Christopher Nolan is apparently the king of the 2010's: No director has more than one movie left except him, who has three!
