If you are talking about Hibernatus's patch, then it is downloadable from here: http://213.237.35.1/acrossdk/stuff/elma1_11hb.zip
I don't know any patches for win xp.
But i guess you're not talking about it

elma doesn't have any winxp patch, but the older version, across, is very difficult to get working in windows xp, since its a dos game. (i think)

though theres no patch for it either.. :(

you may also be reffering to the talk of the glitchyness of elma in XP....to solve that problem download either (or both) directx9 or a hz converter such as refreshforce. :)

1. Update Direct X
2. Update your graphic card drivers
3. http://moposite.com/mopolauta/viewtopic ... ight=#8338
4. Close all other programs when you are playing (internet, virus scanners etc)
5. Change OS
6. Upgrade RAM
7. Change graphic card
8. Buy my computer

9. Open Elma, go back to desktop (ALT + TAB), press CTRL + ALT + DEL, choose "Processes", set priority of elma.exe to very high (right button of mouse). Go back to Elma (ALT + TAB).

More interesting here. I've got an AthlonXP 2600+ with Radeon 9500 Pro graphics card, 512ddr ram, etc etc. If I run Elma (winXP) with no other programs open, it's horribly jerky and nearly unplayable. But if I open winamp or something, and play music, then play elma while the music's playing, Elma is perfectly smooth. Why, why why?

Flat Tracker: Elma uses the same outline for sound like your music player (Winamp?). Switch the sound off in Elma. That's all.

Many people have complained about how their elma is laggy and jerky on Windows XP. I had this problem too until i accidentally discovered a surprisingly efficient solution. It's very simple and should work with most computers with Win XP. According to mr, the trick works pretty well with win2000 also.

Ok, here it is:

1. Open your Quicktime player. (If you don't have one, you can download it for free from here.)

2. Leave the player open and start your elma. (You don't have to be running any videoclips in the player when you play elma, it's enough that it's open. If you close it, then at least in my comp, the jerkyness returns after a couple of hours)

3. Enjoy the smoothest elma you've ever seen. :)

Don't ask me how it works, i have no idea. If someone can explain it, feel free to do it here.

And if you don't understand my instructions, or can't get it to work, contact me on #across and i'll try to help you. Also, if you get it to work and it helps you, i'd like to hear about that too. :)

I've noticed same kind of an effect in some situations, for example when there is a web page opened and there's some flash stuff or something, or when I watch a movie with windows media player (paused also), but it's not happening all the time I think. I don't care anymore cuz after switching to 144hz the lag is only very minimal, like 10lagapples of 100, which is normal. :*

Sometimes, check out the CTRL-ALT-DEL menu, finish all the programs which you don't need and all the programs you look at and don't even know what it is....

Then, ( on my com ) everything goes faster...

YEH, just go to processes, and shut down these processes:

svchost.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe

Then, you elma runs smoother than ever.

maybe your state.dat is corrupted. Try moving state out and then running elma. If it works, well too bad for you. :?
Although I remember pedro had corrupted state, and later that one worked again. 8O

And the lesson is: don't back-up your state.dat or it will get corrupted.

quicktime helps but still it sucks to play with xp. (I just changed to xp less than I week ago) and xp is just too laggy for me, even when I have quicktime. Without quicktime it was unplayable. But it bounce differently so I will use it some anyway. Brake is harder for me to control though. Don´t get the grip.

But blah blah... I got 98 still too so I can swap... so no problems.

Reforce
By adjusting your monitor's refresh rate you can get the Elma running much smoother. Especially in XP. Read the following instructions but remember there's a risk to damage your monitor and graphic card.

Graphic card
Ensure you have correct graphic card driver to maximize the rate.

Default rates
Monitors and graphic cards support some basic refresh rates. They are not the max by default. Try to find out what rates your system supports. Search for the homepage of your graphic card. Also the program called Everest can show it. The info of both the monitor and the graphic card are needed. New graphic cards and monitors support higher rates.

Monitor settings
Enable the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" in Display properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor (or something similar)

Reforce
1. Download the program
2. Launch the program
3. Choose [ACTIVE] -monitor
4. Click Auto Populate
5. Choose the resolution you use in the Elma from the list (default is 640x480)
6. Adjust the refresh rate to the maximun in this resolution (you know the maximum by reading the manual / checking the homepage of the graphic card / using Everest / just iterating [set some rate, switch to Elma, set higher, try again etc. and you don't have to relaunch the game everytime, just switch [ALT + TAB] to it, this can damage your old monitor])
7. I use 120MHz but 160MHz is quite normal in new monitors
8. Check out the real refresh rate in the game (your monitor has some menu itself where you can change brightness and width, it should show the rate somewhere there)
9. Launch QuickTime player (to get turning smoother, read cyre's post above)
10. Enjoy

Troubleshooting
In ATI drivers you need to check in Display properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Display that your maximum rate isn't limited by clicking the monitor icon (there you set max resolution and refresh rate values; note that "Use DCC information" has to be disabled)

Post here your experiences.

Alternative program
RefreshLock

Ps. the text is by mr, he didn't dare to post it here. I just translated it.

OMG it's like i'm playing a whole new elma! I have a crappy monitor, so it only supports 60hz on 1280x1024, which i'm using normally.
My elma is 640x480, and my monitor supports 120hz with that, so with this program, i got twice the refreshes i had before!

And it shows! I can't believe elma can be like this. 8O
It used to run crappy for me.. Now like smooth butter. Be prepeared, i'm gonna brake some wr's soon! And crap, tomorrow schoolexams, and now I can't go to sleep. :(

(i'm using win xp)

Can't download the program, but on the other hand, i don't need to. I was playing around with the setting in my nVidia drivers (Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced, tab with card's name) and there you can select "disregard refresh rate" or whatever it is in english, and there you can boost the refresh rate for the lower resolutions.

But since i play Elma in mongo high resolution (1280x960) and don't have any problems with smoothness, I only played around with Elma in 640x480 and 300 Hz or something for a while and then disabled it. You can't see the difference between 120 and 300 Hz anyway.

BarTek wrote:Well for me the lag in xp (new pc) is hell lot better then my old one.

dont know about you guys but i set quicktime to launch in systemtray when i start the pc. This way its

- automaticly on (so i dont have to bother open it all the time)
- hidden in systemtray (no player window open, cant even see it with alt+tab)

EZZZZZZ!!
of course its better that way, had it always like that, but nowadays it doesnt make my elma smooth unless I open the player

to play it on XP, you have to have separate Elma (which is to Win Xp)

There's no differences in elma versions (official) used to both win98, 2000 or xp (or 95). There have been guys with problems about unsmoothness in xp, but yet solvable I guess.

I have been playing elma with Elma12XP.exe and I didn't found any effect, until I put sound in elma on Best Quality, then it suddenly went smooth.
(wether disabled or enabled, doesn't seem to matter). Abula mentions about errors or system crashes, haven't had any probs so far. Just back up your state.dat I suggest, or even put elma on another partition of your hard drive and not in C:

The smooth effect is noticable, but when putting quicktime on, i can't see an even smoother elma. Also vsync on/off I don't see a smoothing difference. Just the playing experience differs with vsync.

when u use 1024x768 your rr is 85hz and 9with my monitor and graphic card) when i start elma it doesn't change to 120hz in 640x480 and 100hz in 8oox6oo as it should. solution: download RefreshForce and leave only 120hz mode for 640x480 and 100hz mode for 8x6. i think it doesn't matter in other games anyway cause u aint got (and need) more than those for example 85hz (fps) anyway

http://elmawigi.ratmind.info/~ribot/elm ... XP_Lagging

there is however a win xp patch that this topic is initially about. does anyone know about it? i have only tried it without noticing anything, and i dont really trust it (who knows what it really is?)
