Misuse of the word 'professional'
Could everyone stop using phrases like, 'professional elma player,' or 'professional level maker' as this is wrong. The word professional suggests that it is your profession and you get paid for it. I'll leave you all to argue about that.

Or maybe we create new way to use the word, piece of culture ;]. Surprisingly it was me who said this? Anyway there is prettu much misuse in Elma scene and this one doesn't affect much harm. Anyway I will fix them to Moposite some lovely day.Chris Penrose wrote:Maybe people will stop doing that after they read this topic.

hi
chris: stop trying to show off your english skills(or maybe lack there of) and accept that professional is a part of elma culture now. many people who speak english as their first language come here and to #across and try to correct the non english speakers. the thing is, they generally dont care if they spell shit wrong. same goes with if they use the wrang word. who cares?
anyways, when your talking with friend or something and your saying how good they are at something for example, they might say 'yep, im a pro". this doesn't at all mean that they get paid does it? its part of normal speach. you dont have to take things so literally.
/mick
btw: i speak english as my first language too, so i kinda know what im talking about.

Chris Penrose, I have also be woundering why they use the word pro.
And after reading this thread: http://moposite.com/mopolauta/viewtopic.php?t=380 and this interview: http://213.237.35.1/acrossdk/stuff/DmDInterview.txt have I found out that they are NOT pro.....
So you're right they sould olny use thw word pro if they really are an proffesional kuski....

Re: A look into the dictionary...
I don't see any more reason to discuss this, because, from your reader's digest dictionary, you showed that we did NOT use the word professional the wrong way:

ye it's not wrong to say pro even according to pretentious scholars

I'm a 'real englishman' too!
And its true that pro/professional means someone who does something and gets paid for it.
Expert means someone who is very good at something, basically what we've worked out so far.
As for new words to describe 1337orz kuskis, sleskuski springs to mind for some reason...

You can't solve this by translating to another language. "Ammattilainen" is a person who has an "ammatti" (occupation) and therefore he gets paid for it.dz wrote:so if ya translate professional to finnish it would be "ammattilainen", and could any finn tell if the meaning is very same, someone who gets paid ?
My dictionary offers also the words like "pätevä", "asiantunteva" and "osaava" to the word "professional" which mean "competent", "able", "capable" and "expert". Due to these facts we notice "professional" meaning also "expert".

If you guys can come up with words like 'kuski' 'hoyla' (are these made up, or do they actually mean stuff?) etc. then surely you can make up a word meaning 'over bwad kuski'

abula how about profession-professional?
chuckles höylä comes from cheese slicer - to slice off thin slices of cheese (tenths of seconds for example) until u barely can make any more slices.
then back to topic. i wouldnt call el ma a profession yet, but professional is commonly used to describe ppl that are very good at something. like if u play some game with friends, and you have practiced that game on your free time, doing official competitions, then it's quite usual they call u professional. at least in swedish language it's commonly spread (actually the word profession doesn't exist). the point is that pro is a convenient word, and also a way to give credit to the players u admire. if u don't think the word means this, then u can call it slang. like the verb screw for example, it suggests you do something with a screw, how come then ppl say this about ppl fucking when it's wrong?!!
