The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Ever watched those marine biology documentaries by Jacques Cousteau? Remember his ship, the Calypso? If so, you'll appreciate the great parody in this film even more. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is a comedy about a bunch of people who explore the underwater world and get into heaps of trouble with various things.

Everything in this movie is hilarious, the costumes, the characters, the music etc, even the swearing. At this point, to avoid misunderstandings, I'd like to point out that this movie is also very far from Police Academy and Leslie Nielsen -type films, which is a big bonus. Hilarious and smart is a very tricky combination but is very much there in this film. Of course, I can't see it from the perspective of someone who hasn't seen any Cousteau docs, but I think they won't be lost with this, maybe they'll just see this a bit differently, dunno.

The main role, the leader of the expedition, Steve Zissou, is played by Bill Murray who, although I don't always like him that much, is excellent in this film. His sense of comedy and his poker face fits to the role like a glove. Also Willem Dafoe as Klaus Daimler is so funny that he deserves a mention. Other main characters are played by Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum. The director is Wes Anderson.

The movie is smart, funny and entertaining. Ez recommend.

seen today and yesterday:

edward scissorhands, this is excellent and one of burtons best as boneless said (though i've yet to watch some of his work)

sånger från andra våningen, extremely beautiful and mindblowing. i really must see this again to fully appreciate it i think. highly recomended!

before night falls, johnny depp dressed in womens clothing shoving stuff up the arse was maybe the highpoint, which it really shouldn't have been... it's about a cuban gay writer and his troubling life under the castro regime. i recently saw a docu about castro made by oliver stone where castro is confronted with the stance towards homosexuals he had earlier and he just wiped it away as a minor not so important mistake  that made this movie really surreal to watch. hard to figure out what cuba really is like. oh and by the way the movie was ok good.

closer, midway through i thought it was about to fall flat on its stomach. but the ending was good, and there are lots of doublemeanings of things that begin to sink in. maybe i should watch this one again too. surprisingly good. and you get to see natalie portman as a stripper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111

Closer was one of the rare movies I didn't want to watch over halfways. Maybe the idea is appealing someone, not me especially when I watched it with my girl.

i know, many people were disappointed by takashi miike, guest star kitano sucks too in this movie and when i watched it at home i didnt like it very much either.
yesterday i was at a very cool cinema and i gotta say, it`s completely different. ok, it is disturbing, no logical plot can be seen but for sure it is great entertaining. the subtitles i used didnt show translation for the songs the funky guitar-player was playing, in cinema they were translated: very useful and funny.

I think you mean The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy :)
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?
