Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
I am leaving to Singapore and Indonesia this sunday for 17 days. Is there something not-so-well-known you would recommend me to see there, John? (we are visiting Gardens by the Bay and Spectra light show for sure, but I dunno 'bout much else)
thxo mucho
Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
i recommend Bludek meet Johnik. (from wat i've understood Bludek very nice human being)
Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
Sorry the late reply, if you're still there:
I enjoyed Singapore Zoo very much. Also Sentosa ofc, check Sentosa Luge for example, also there's a show there called Crane Dance which is a nice finish after a full day on the island :) On Sentosa you could also visit the hotel where Trump and Jong-Un met. Then you could drink Singapore Sling at the skybar on Marina Bay Sands (or at Raffles if done renovating). Also take a trip to Southern Ridges Park (quite close to Harbourfront) and walk through the park between the tree's canopies. Boomer might have more ideas as he has lived there!

Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
I've never been to Asia, so many things (at least at Bali) suprised me. South of Bali is stupidly overcrowded with turists and with locas who want to take money away from you. So we rented a scooter, drove away and the rest of our trip was amazing. Street food, waterfalls, rice fields, mountains, snorcheling with fishes, temples, beaches, it was sik great.Bludek 25 Apr 2018, 16:22 wrote:Also my GF and I bought flight tickets to Singapore for 16 days this autumn We'll also visit Bali and prolly one more island. excited af
It was pretty fucking max. We spent 4 days in Singapore, 9 days at Bali and 2 days at Nusa Penida.
Few bad things about Bali: bargaining is stupid. I like set prices. Driving at the left side of the road with other scooters, cars, buses and trucks feels ultra super unsafe. Like wtf, I am shivering a bit now, coz of the thought about how unsafe it was. But there was no other choise, I guess.
Anyways, now my list looks like this:
Czech Republic
Slovakia
Germany
Switzerland
Austria
United Kingdom
Italy
France
Croatia
Slovenia
Greece
USA
Belgium
Monaco
Lichtenstein
Hungary
Poland
Finland
Latvia
Denmark
Netherlands
Ukraine
Singapore
Indonesia

Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
Glad you enjoyed bali. Sorry on behalf of Aus for the huge proportion of annoying tourists from here.
Driving on left side of road is norm for a lot of places (eg. a large chunk of asia), so there's nothing unsafe about it. Feels wrong for me to drive on right side of road The rest of the driving status in south-east asia is unsafe though - people ignoring safety measures and not driving sensibly.
Re: Bargaining, yeah it's annoying when you're used to set prices, but it's a huge part of market culture in asia. They know the price they initially are asking, and they know where they will drop down to, and it's just a matter of being good with words/having good banter to get them there quickly. For them, it's started as easy way to make a bit more money from lazy or stupid tourists, but it's now huge ingrained part of their culture, and many balinese or other SEA market people find it a bit disrespectful when people won't engage with bartering with them. Remember that they are too used to Australian tourists who are usually happy to have some fun with them and share a couple of laughs.
You two look good together.

Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
ty, mans ))
Haru: driving on the left side was oke. Ii was even quite refreshing experience for me, when we were driving in the countryside with minimum trafic. But the trafic in city was super-scary. I am not used to buses driving few centimeters away from me with nothing inbetween us. Also crossroads are stupid: whoever is honging the most goes first - at least that's what it felt like to me. But maybe it only felt like that to me (us), because I drive car all the time, but I am not used to driving a little scooter.

Ye it can be funny how often mans honk in these places. They use it more as a "hi I here don't hit me" than an abrupt signal to grab attention

I've turned 30 yo in february. So as a surprise birthday gift my GF (+ my parents) bought me ticket to see Real Madrid at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, which was the sickest and coolest surprise ever. Madrid is oke city, but seeing Bale, Marcelo, Ramos, Modrić and others to play IRL was so fucking amazing.

Went to Egypt with GF and another couple for 8 days holiday. There was a decent offer (~550EUR, flight tickets, all inclusive resort - local alcohol included) from local travel agency and our friends asked us if we'd go with with them and we were like: "sure, why not". It was the first time for me in Africa and first time in resort. All we did was eating, drinking cocktails, swimming and sunbathing. Oh and driving for 3 hour in rocky desert on ATV. That was the best part for my.
will go again to lay on my ass in resort for sure when I am 70 yo, mebe sooner. But active holiday is more fun for my now, obv

I think it's nice to include overseas territories. Hell, writing "the UK" doesn't do any justice to some st helena, or "Denmark" to Greenland etc.

Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
Some of you guys have visited so many places, how do you find the time? :O Travelling is the best thing I know but it's only been a few years where I've had the means to do so, time still an issue tho. Pre-covid I tried to get at least two trips done each year, still lagging behind a lot. Some dream destinations are Costa Rica and Madagascar, has anyone been there?
Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
For me I think it's 1 longer combination trip most years that does it.John wrote: ↑12 Dec 2020, 04:19 Some of you guys have visited so many places, how do you find the time? :O Travelling is the best thing I know but it's only been a few years where I've had the means to do so, time still an issue tho. Interrailed with friends through Europe for a month and saw many countries for 2-4 days each that way. I kinda see it as a sampling, and the places I/we liked the most we revisited/will revisit.
Also when traveling far (to another continent), imo it's worth it to spend some more time in that area and do maybe 1 week/country in 3 or 4 countries on that continent/in that area.
Also helps for me to live in Stockholm. I have 30 minutes to Arlanda, So I can be door to door to most big cities in Europe in just a few hours. So ez to do some longer weekends with the days left over from the long trip)

I went to UAE in 16.-23.1.2021 with gf. I was against it at first, obv coz of covid-19 related restrictions, but eventually she persuaded my. She is switching jobs atm and she needed to use her last 5 mandatory paid vacation days from prev job. The countries which allow tourists atm are few and far between, but eventually we agreed on Dubai, UAE.
We had to buy an expensive-ish insurance, we had to take a PCR covid test in our home country 96hrs before the flight, then another one at Dubai airport and another one after return to Czechia. Also we had to stay in our hotel room for the entire 1st day, coz we weren't allowed to leave it until we've received the results of the airport test.
But eventually everything worked out fine and we had a great time in Dubai. Most of the days we spend ~3 hrs on beach and in the afternoon/night we went to explore the city.
Highlights:
Burj Khalifa (which I always wanted to see IRL) - We went to the 125th floor and it was an incredible experience
Bluewaters and Dubai Marina - there was a sik drone show and nice skyscrapers
Palm Jumeirah Island - I mean wtf, man-made island in the shape of a palm? Arabs be crazy, man
Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark - I wanted to go to some theme park (I love rollercoasters), but gf didn't want to, so we went to waterpark for a day instead and it was great
Bur Dubai Souk Market - traditional market with spices and gold. Not all that pleasant experience, coz of the many Arabs trying to sell us fake Rolex and Louis Vuitton, but cool to see nonetheless
Overall, traveling in Covid-19 pandemic was a double-edged sword. On one hand we had to wear masks at all times (except on waterpark rides) and we had to pay a bit extra for tests and insurance, but on the other hand there were no queues anywhere, the beaches were almost empty and we got to enjoy the city without the crowds.

Re: How many countries have YOU been in?
One big trip takes three months. One for planning, one for travelling and one for analysis so you can make 2-3 big trips per year. My way to get extra time is to skip TV series. Well actually I started to watch some of them during the virus time like Tour de France, Giro de Italia and Primitive Technology.
I put lots of effort to travelling, more than anything else at the moment. Holidays are not for relaxing, work is.

My wife and I went to Mexico for 21 days (with a 2+1 days stop in New York city) for our honeymoon. Got married in June 2022, btw.
New York was soooo amazing, highly recommend to anyone and everyone.
Mexico felt unsafe at times, some experiences were really great, though. We both got food poisoned (at diff times), which effectively shortened our trip and made us miss some places we wanted to see (like Chichén Itzá and Oaxaca).
