12 or 24 hour days?

Post by zworqy »

I just thought of this, regarding my topic "Stupid american date format".
  • What is used in your country:

    12-hour day (a.m. and p.m.)
    24-hour day (or military time as it's called in USA)
In Sweden and the rest of the nordic countries it's 24 hour days, as you probably know already. That's the best in my opinion. If someone says "see you at 9:00" you know it's in the morning and not evening. No confusion. But 12-hour days are not that bad either, if you know that a.m. is in the morning and p.m. is in the afternoon, that is. But since a day has 24 hours, why not say so?

I think 24 hours is easier, but I don't really care. :)

Obviously we have a 24 hour day :D but when talking, we'd use a 12 hour thingy. "See you at 9" kinda obviously means 'the next 9', or "11 tomorrow" would nearly always be 11am, cos how often do you plan things for that late the next day? Anyway, you almost always mean pm anyway...everyone hates the morning

pm = post midday

but do u think that the reason you use 24 time is because of the way ur years work like, for 6 months lots of sun and 6 months lots of dark, so am/pm would loose relevence

What? It is meridian. It's an old French word that means 'midday'.

"What?" yourself, MagnusB. French?

a.m. and p.m. are LATIN abbrevations...
"meridiem" is the latin word for "noon" or "midday"

Side note: "meridian" means "average, middle value"

I checked it out. It turns out that you can use both forms.
So both Meridian and Meridiem is right.

Please don't laugh at mental disaster. Some people are born with a lack of oxygen, they can't help it.
