How to turn vsync off in vista?

Post by Kuri_ahf »

Greetings,

anyone with nvidia graphics card got vsync off in vista for (b)elma?

There is a known bug involving vista + nvidia drivers, where global vsync off force via drivers does not work. The only solution is for the application itself to force vsync off.

But because elma/belma does not have a setting to disable vsync, I wonder if anyone has invented a trick to force vsync off in vista.

Any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks 8)

Just enter nvidia control center in advanced mode and at the bottom on some of the 3 categories (cant remember which) there is some "force vsync OFF"... that worked fine for me.

Are you using Vista?

For me, that works only in XP but not Vista...

I'd like to get a confirm if anyone has managed to disable vsync in Vista (for elma) with a nvidia graphics card.

A quote from nVidia:

"Due to architectural changes in the new Windows Vista Window Display Driver Model (WDDM), the graphics driver can no longer disable vsync from its own driver or Control Panel. Selecting this option from the NVIDIA Control Panel will have no affect on DirectX applications. For applications that use DirectX on Vista, use the vertical sync setting within the application."

I have same problem, like Kuri_ahf under Vista/GF8600M. Should be great to find some workaround for it (Maybe milagros can do something?).

i don't really use to do much stuff with directX lately, but there was some parameter that changed default vsync and it should be possible to patch
unfortunately i don't really remember how was it exactly and at the moment i would rather finish current ballelma patch first
i guess it would take me a while to figure it out

if someone dont want to search for it here is the whole instruction:
Reduce the graphics hardware acceleration setting to determine whether there is an issue with the video adapter or the video driver. To do this, follow the steps for the operating system that you are using.
Windows Vista

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization, click Personalization, click Display Settings, and then click Advanced Settings.
2. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change Settings.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
3. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. The Hardware Acceleration setting should not be reduced to less than three notches from the right. The Hardware Acceleration setting should be set to the following:
Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations.
If you reduce the Hardware Acceleration setting, you may experience more issues with video rendering.
4. Click OK three times, and then close the window.
and here is the warning:
The above option depends on your Graphics Drivers as well, as an example on my system using the Nvidia 158.18 drivers, they don't allow accleration options to be altered at all.
for me everything is fine until clicking change settings in step 2... that guy had 158.18 drivers, i have 180.48, but neither of them allow to change those settings. what drivers do you have mawane? and who with what drivers may edit those?

dude, this is kinda max thing actually, because it works on laptop also. I had 900 fps on a really shitty 1.6Ghz laptop. I had almost same feeling as playing at home (after I found good buttons for it).

So I tested on my home comp also, increasing from 800fps to 1900, not that it matters at all at that point, but it might matter if your comp is only capable of 300fps or so, can raise it a LOT.

btw it's run - > dxdiag - > display tab - > disable directdraw acceleration on win XP

very, very good find

thx, but mila, zwor and markku helped me kinda much, not the DirectDraw specificly, but DirectX

i wonder if this option harms to the computer
it sure does for replay keys to make slow motion and pause, dunno why

EDIT: I've a question, whats the difference between 500 and 2000 fps when playing?

ah ok, well direct3d goes off when putting directdraw off.

2k fps means 999 fps for elma, according to one pro called milagros. 999 fps is just max. Honestly i dont see any difference between 500 and 999 fps, probably with 999fps you can do slide brutals with less speed than 500fps, which would mean hi flyer is optimal at 999fps. dont see any other benefits really

Can you now force VSync on? :)

The only reason I can imagine is this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc835893.aspx
A Windows Vista SP1 or later system with a driver that follows the Windows Vista Display Driver Model and that supports this feature will turn off the counting feature of the VSync interrupt if no graphics processing unit (GPU) activity occurs for 10 continuous periods of 1/Vsync, where VSync is the monitor refresh rate.
If so, elma does not occur any GPU activity :) Well, maybe, if it uses clean DirectDraw without any Direct3D launches.

There's no way I can switch vsync. And default status is on, as always ;S

Of course I could play with 60 fps... IF THERE WERE NO GOD DAMN KEYPRESS DELAY

My gfx card is ATI Mobility Radeon 3100. Tried to search for a driver update but couldn't really find anything...

ok smibu then without those enable / disable buttons try this in regedit:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers, SoftwareOnly
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw, EmulationOnly

edit both binary data so the value is 1

on my machine there was 0000 00 00 00 00(0) on both and if i put 0000 01 00 00 00 the value will be (1), I don't see the logic because I thought it's supposed to be 0000 00 00 00 01.

either way putting values 0000 01 00 00 00 on both Direct3D\Drivers, SoftwareOnly and DirectDraw, EmulationOnly turns off my directdraw and direct3d

what I dont know is that if you even have those entries in the register if you dont have the buttons even

Well ye you got that right, I don't have SoftwareOnly/EmulationOnly anywhere. Only these kinds of stuff:
Image
Besides, it's pretty risky to start editing any of these things in registry editor if you don't know exactly this stuff... and I don't

Tried also ATI Tray Tools and I switched vsync off from there, but it didn't have any kind of effect. Switched between resolutions to try to apply the change somehow, but that didn't work either

I really wonder if there's some newer driver for this gfx card

I installed now ATI Catalyst Control center (some official program I guess). It auto-detected my gfx card and updated some drivers I guess. I was also able to switch "Wait for vertical refresh" off/on (+many other options with the control center), but lol, it didn't affect at all when I checked f_rate.inf... and keydelay was also present. And I was like 95% sure that this would work...

I still can't change directdraw acceleration and those. I'll try to look for some more drivers tomorrow but I'm running out of means too

Vista x32 Home Premium, GeForce 8600M GT. Force vsync doesn't work(

Installed all updated, installed latest (185.85) driver, tryed D3DOverrider. No offect :(

So, some questions to Pawq/Mila/anybody else who have high FPS on Vista:
1) Do you have ATI or nVidia videocard?
2) Do you have DX10 videocard?
3) Are you sure you use Vista :)

I have gf 9600gt (from nvdia ofc :P ), obviously dx10 is installed, as are the newest drivers (185.85). And yes, I'm goddamn sure i use vista :D (32bit home basic if it matters). I haven't installed any drivers for monitor, I haven't done anything with the registry. At the moment I have reeeally no idea what in fact worked, but if you ask any questions about my settings, configs drivers etc. i will answer as precisely as i can.

I have the same problem as smibu and I tried all sorts of shit like a year ago when I got my laptop. But I never found a solution. I will be so extremely happy if there somehow is found one...

edit: I'm gonna look into that registry fix zammp0r is talking about. That might be the only thing I haven't tried.

I'm glad I'm not alone with this

What I heard is that in Vista, it's up to the application's own setting whether to use vsync or not. Elma's default setting is ON. I asked mila a while ago if it's possible to switch off. He said it may be possible, but he's not working on eol atm. So not all the hope is gone!
