The Third Step will most likely start on Saturday. The final show will be in the beginning of February, but the date is not decided yet.

I might get some input here though: What day of the week is preferred? Usually we've held it on a Sunday, except in 2003 when it was on a Saturday and in 2004 when it was on a Friday. I suppose most people prefer Sundays over Saturdays, but how about other days of the week?

I wish the show could be on Tuesday, 9th of February, because i have to go for my winter holidays (i have in 1nd to 14th) away from home, and will be back there probably on Sunday or Monday, 7th or 8th ;x. Or maybe the next Sunday, 14th, but i guess you dont want it to be so late... damn, i may miss the show :(

Community Award
This will be an award decided entirely by the community. You will vote for the people you think most deserve a special honour, be it for their helpfulness, kindness, contributions or simply for being a great player. The reason will be the individual voters' own decision. The idea is that the award will go to the kuski most appreciated by the community. There will be no set of candidates to vote over in this category, each voter decides himself.
The voting process for this award is therefore different, see below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are only eligible to vote if you are one of the following kuskis (why?) (listed in alphabetical order):

adi, Alma, Bismuth, Blud, Cap, CuLiNo, Costya, Chris, Ecchi, FinMan, _FreaK_, gimp, Haruhi, insane guy, Jappe2, Jarkko, John, Juish, k0en94, Kazeta, Kiiwi, kinghias, Koopa, Labs, Lukazz, Madness, Marian, Mawane, Mielz, Mika_27, Morgan, nick-o-matic, Pab, Pawq, Quinn, ramone, roope, sla, Thorze, Xiphias, zebra, zworqy

Voting instructions: When voting, send a PM to SveinR with your votes. The votes have to be given in ranked order, from 1st to 5th. Each 1st position will give 5 points, each 2nd position will give 4 points, etc. The jury will assemble these points when the voting process has ended. You can only vote and send a PM once. Do not make your votes public in this thread.
Remember that you don't have to vote in each and every category, but in the categories you do vote in, you have to pick your top 5. Your vote won't count otherwise.

In all categories: Only base your votes on what has happened in the GAA period.
Site: Vote for the sites that have improved the most and increased its relevance the most over the GAA period.
WRs: See http://www.moposite.com/records_elma_wrs.php

Voting for the Community Award: You will list up to 3 people, in ranked order from 1st to 3rd. Each 1st position will give 5 points, each 2nd position will give 3 points and each 3rd position will give 1 point. Send your votes in this category in the same PM as your other votes. You do not have to vote in this category. I would encourage people to write a few words about the people you vote for (if you have something specific to mention), because when we present the winner of this category, we'll include your reasons behind voting for him in some sort of speech. This speech will be based on what you've written.

Deadline of sending in your votes: Tuesday February 2nd 2010, 23:59 EET (GMT+2)
Note: The GAA09 period is from December 16th 2008 to December 31st 2009.

No. Thundr- [GF] is who you speak of, and is a different kuski. Thunder is still a little prior to the time period i believe.

At least he didn't join lauta before November 2008, and registered on Moposite in September 2008. That's inside the criteria for Rookie.

SveinR: The link "why" takes me to the instructions in a previous post from you. Although the rules are clearly stated, it doesn't really say why only those from the first step are eligible to vote other than you want to some some activity during this process. Is this the "only" reason, is it to prevent votes from random kuskis?

This is not criticism from me, I'm just curious.

I think the final step really detracts from the GAAs' value.

It's like saying: "Here, we'll let the community decide who they think deserves the awards."
"Now, let's just disregard these votes and let these 6 popular players decide."

In summary, ban all.

Yeah, one reason is to prevent votes from random kuskis. Someone might for instance get all their friends to register and vote for them, eventhough they don't know anything about elma.
Another reason is to make sure those who vote have been active so they "know what they're voting for".

That was back in GAA04, the community has more power now. Back then, the #1 pick from the community got 1 vote. Now, the #1 pick gets 2 votes and the #2 pick gets 1 vote (as well as that the community vote matters in case of a draw). Looking at the history from the past years, the #1 pick from the community also gets the GAA in most cases, usually there are just 2-3 categories where that doesn't happen.

But I am open for changing this. I've put this up for discussion among the jury the past years, but the conclusion has been to keep the system as it is now. Here are some thoughts about the matter that I wrote for this year's GAA preparations:

No jury votes in the Fifth step. This has been up for discussion before, but the conclusion has always been to keep the jury votes, with the main reasoning that it makes the GAA seem more official. However I do find that the community as a whole make sound, reasonable decisions in the Third step, so there definitely is an argument for letting the community's points decide everything. In most cases the community's winner is the winner after the jury votes have been cast too; it tends to differ in about 2 categories (last year perhaps was an anomaly: In a total of 4 categories, the ultimate winner was different from the one who got most points from the community). But of course, the jury members have very good reasons for voting differently, and they are after all picked because of their good knowledge of the elma scene. And we also have the Community Award, where the community does in fact decide everything, with no input from the jury.

I would be very interested in hearing more opinions about this from the community. Perhaps I should make a poll?

But they'll be left at 8, that way people don't have to redo their votes, and it's clear who the nominees are.

I too think the jusy has too much power. For instance, most of the jury members (Zebra is a good example) are nominated in so many categories. I'm not questioning Zebra's judgement, only saying that a person who has created something is often very proud of this and have stronger feelings towards this than other people's work. It's completely natural and this is why I think that either the jury is 100% objective and neutral (not nominated in anything); this would however be very hard since most nominated kuskis are old schoolers which are also perfect candidates for a jury member. Either that, or the community have at least 51% of the saying.

I remember when I was nominated for GAA contest. I felt like such an underdog with zebra in the jury :P. On the other hand that is one example where the jury votes actually fell in the other directions which could kill my previous point. It's definately up for discussion! I'm glad you brought this up SveinR!

The rules for the jury's voting states that a jury member cannot vote for himself, but he can choose to not vote in a category where he is nominated.

It's pretty clear you're gonna win the Community award though, since your influence is evidently connected with almost every field eventhough only indirectly.

And that's no cynism, that's what I personally believe. I hope other people do too.

According the rules, no matter how long he played before, but its important when he entered the scene. For example, fedosik is russian oldschooller well known in our scene so i agree with his elimination. But i've never heared abour Nekit till this year.

Nekit played battles in belma in August 2008, which makes him ineligible. But obviously we agree he was a good choice for Rookie, had he not been ineligible, since we originally nominated him.

is this one month difference of entrance between nekit (august) and thunder (september) enough to eliminate one and keep the other?

ok, then it shows the real role of jury in voting process. some people suggest Nekit as good candidature, but jury said "no". but in this case it seems that we, jury, are more clever then you, scene, so it will be us who decide who is real good candidature for rookie.

Actually, most of the scene didn't have a fucking clue when thunder joined. I have in several previous posts, provided an accurate guide of who is and isn't eligible. SveinR has seen this.

i could say that thunder entered much earlier then nekit

http://elastomania.awardspace.com/home. ... =home&id=5
http://club.elastomania.ru/eng/info/users/?id=6647

news that thunder under minute dated by 01.02.08, that is earlier than registration of Nekit in elmaclub on 23.08.08, where he hadn't even finished all levels.

but i dont want elimination of thunder. i want Nekit back

I so hate this rookie-definition. I really think like this:
nick-o-matic wrote:You should use also some common sense instead of just one single absolute rule in the definition of a rookie. (......) Actually I think there should be the best improver-prize instead of the best rookie-prize.
Like you should be allowed to play elma a bit even for quite a long time but if you really start playing more and becoming rapidly better in 2009 there should be the possiblity to nominate you the 2009 rookie or improver or whatever. In the current system if you apper to the scene for example in June or July its impsy rookie prize which sucks.
