Movie tips.

Post by cyre »

This topic is all about giving tips on good movies. They don't have to be among the best films you've ever seen, but just something you'd like to recommend to other people. You can do a small review if you want but there's already a topic for that (although i can't find it right now ;) ) Remember not to spoil the movie.

I'll start this off by recommending a nice animated film. It's called Finding Nemo and it's probably the best animated film i've seen, or at least equal to Toy Story and Lion King. Really much funny stuff for adults as well as kids. Also, visually it's damn beautiful. A quality movie by Disney & Pixar.

As i'm writing this, there are some other films also popping to my head and i'd like to take the time to recommend one of them. A unique sci-fi film called Solaris. Starring George Clooney (yes i know, but he's actually quite good in this movie ;) ) It's a slow paced story with amazing visual contents, and as i said, it's kind of unique among these hollywood, hollywood, money, money money, blow stuff up in huge ball of fire, kill some bad aliens and get the hot chick -type "sci-fi" films of today. Many don't like Solaris but that doesn't make it bad, right? :) I didn't like it at first either, but it kind of grows on you :) I think that with "Contact" this is one of the few modern films that actually fall into the category of real sci-fi

Ok sorry, didn't mean this to be so long. :)

Write some movie tips, okay?!

do you really see no difference between 'best and worst movies' and 'movie tips' topics? 8O

and like i said.. you don't have talk about the best movies you've seen...just something you can recommend

i don't care if they do. i mean, pretty much everything has been discussed in off-topic conversations somewhere on lauta. but that really doesn't matter does it? let me make it simple for you: if you, zworqy, want to make a topic about ppls opinions on rabbits, you don't really care if they've talked about rabbits in the 'new internal times' topic, do you?

ok maybe a bit extreme example but i hope you got the point. 2 different topics. ok?

just post some movie tip now, ok

Please it's a cheap remake (as I metioned in the OTHER film topic) of the great Andrei Tarkovsky's masterpiece.

ye you might be right, but i haven't seen the original version so i can't say anything about that. but at least this one was good.

one other nice film also came to my mind while ago. K-pax. It's about a guy who claims to be something strange and other ppl have hard time buying it. actually they think he's crazy. when i watched this, i found it quite hard to predict who would be right and what was the real truth and that's always interesting. cast is also very good, Jeff Bridges plays the sceptical psychiatrist and the other leading role is played by one of my all time favourite actors , Kevin Spacey.

Is it true they needed subtitles in foreign versions cos their Cockney slang was too strong?

What do you mean? Non-Norwegian films always have subtitles here...
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

I liked it too. It has a weird and chilling atmosphere. And that video clip looks cool too. I actually found this film to be quite scary, at least when you have the "right attitude" when watching it. By that i mean that you aren't on "blah, this movie aint scary at all" -mood when you start watching it ;)

I'd like to see the original japanese version, Ringu.

Ah, probably not the same then...
Apparantly the American version had to have English subtitles because the slang the Londoners use is too crazy. They had to translate it back into English :D

Save the green planet (2003)
- South Korean movie about a guy that wants to save the planet from aliens. Great movie that mixes different genres including comedy,sci-fi and horror.

Ong-Bak (2003)
- Movie from Thailand, story is kinda usual and boring but the martial arts scenes are really something. This ain't no wire-fu I tell ya.

Versus (2000)
- Low-budget comedy/action/zombie flick directed by a talented man called Ryuhei Kitamura. Amazing.
Blimey.

Minority Report (2002)

Although clearly a big budget hollywood flick and made for the masses, i found this film good and very enjoyable to watch. It's a well made sci-fi film with a clever plot and some interesting philosophical questions about fate. For example, if you were told that in the near future you'll meet some guy at some place, would you end up meeting that guy in that place just by trying to avoid meeting that guy in that place?

The movie is directed by Steven Spielberg and you can see Tom Cruise in the main role and Colin Farrell and Max von Sydow etc in the supporting roles.
In my opinion, Minority Report is a good choise if you haven't seen it yet

Adaptation (2002)

A very clever film about a screenwriter, Charile Kaufman, who has problems with his new script. It's hard to describe the film any more without giving too much stuff up. Suffice to say, it's a very smart movie with a very interesting and multilayered plot. The movie is directed by Spike Jonze, writing credits go to Susan Orlean and Charlie Kaufman (screenplay). In main roles we have Nicholas Cage and Meryl Streep, both of them very impressive in their roles.

So if you like movies that are a bit different from the mainstream and require a bit thinking from the viewers part, I suggest you watch Adaptation. It's definitely worth the time.

Just saw "Gothika" on cinema, and I must say that though it has been getting lots of bad critics, this movie was really something for me. Lots of "chair-jumping" and screams from the attendance. A quite scary movie, which you cannot think is boring. I recommend it.
