It's just like afro and gipsy ppl's state here in Hungary.
I've also heard many horrible army stories about this from my older friends and relatives. In the old days this bullying and making ppl do humiliating things just because they are lower in the ranks or "simputus" as we finns call it, used to be quite common here too and many ppl had serious mental problems in the army because of this and some even tried to commit suicide.
Luckily things aren't the same anymore, at least in Finland. In 2001-2002 i spent 9 months in the army, the place was Upinniemi, which used to be one of the worst "simputus" places in the past. During these 9 months, i only heard of very few cases of "simputus". Those few cases weren't very serious and i never had any personal experiences of it. So the situation has indeed improved in Finland.

I'm thinking of joining army... I missed my first time to see if I could join... so I'm going there in 10th Februari and see if I could join..
I think I wanna go to army, cus it's like cullt, u've heard so much about it too! some fun things ans so... but I bet it's not fun at all maybe 5%
but if then I'll join it in year 2004 Januari and it's 300days long..unitll around dec/jan. dunno really...
but then in sweden u gert like 60kr each day and ~3000e...!!
There's 102 NOK every day in the norwegian military.. If you're sent to a place far north, theres most likely nothing to spend the money on, so it's possible to save some money for later studies in the military..
ye it's not that much but I really tought it was 3000e...
well I really dont know if I should go now?! I mean I could work instead, and dont waste a year... Work in Norway and earn BIG money, f-cking goldmine!
From my father i've only heard many good, and sometimes funny stories about army, it was a great experience for him i guess. But now everything is a little (?) bit different from the past. Young ppl are slightly diff., they are much more reckless, and ,,stupid" (at least here in hungary).
Anyway, my father told me a story, they were on a mission (practicing), and a guy lost his granate during the travel, so he was sent back to find it

i think i might join the army. in aust it's like a university. you can go there, and learn a trade while being in the army. like you could learn to be a carpenter and be paid while you work and learn how to be a carpenter. would be better than a normal uni i think.
minimum age to join is like 1,5 years away. a friend of the family quit school to be in that army and he was encouraged! to do it.

But is it compulsory in Latvia? In Finland it is. Army, civil service or jail. And the money you get isn't much at all. Maximum is 1922e in a year.
I have 127 mornings left. I'm now Officer Cadet (upseerikokelas / Officersaspirant) and after those mornings I'll be Second Lieutenant (vänrikki / Fänrik).
Army is a coal place, I recommend you to go there and enjoy the whole 362 days set.
Ok, my army is over. Actually it has been over 11 days now. I'm so happy. It took 362 days of my life but it also gave so much. New friends, experiences, better leadership and training abilities, self confidence, skills in nature, physical shape, ability to work with high stress...
Later on I will release my army page with a story, pictures and of course stats :].
Yesterday I was at the thing where you find out if you have to go to army or not. Not luck for me, I have to go to army.
Normal army is 4 months in Denmark. But I choose this thing where you learn to become fireman and rescue ppl and such. That is 6 months. I will go on august 2007.
There's a place some 20 km's next to where I live so I can take home most days.
