Fast Design Competition

Post by zebra »

I would like to introduce you a totally new kind of competition.
In Fast Design Competition you have to make as fast lev as
you can and then drive as fast time to it as possible.
The idea is that you are given a base lev where all the apples, killers,
start place and exit are predefined and you can't move or remove them.
You have to design nice polygons there to be able to finish the lev as fast as you can.
So in this competition, both level designers and players are
able to participate. The best time driver doesn't have to
be the same person as the level designer, so some
co-operation is to be expected.

Before you read on, read rules and download the base lev:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/FDC.html
http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/FD01.lev

I think this thread is a good place to upload your levs if you want
them to be generally höyled. But you can also keep your levs
in private and play them only by yourself if you think you can
win all by yourself.

If you don't know what to do, i made a 'demo level' so you see how this thing goes. Please do not höyl this lev, because this is not the fastest way to collect all the apples.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/FD01ze.lev
http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/FD01zeze.rec

The deadline (as you can see in the rules) is 12th December 2004 at 24.00 EET, so send your levs and recs before that to zebra@mbnet.fi.

Let's see how ppl like this, but i think this could be a nice competition.

Really nice and new idea for a competition. Maybe there could also be some pre-defined polygons also that shouldn't be touched.

Huh.

...and people say there aren't much new things to elma anymore..
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Brilliant idea!! And I see in your lev that it's allowed to "build in" the killers so they are impossible to die on. (that's what i did in my lev too)

But maybe that is bad... I dunno.

Edit: Why the hell isn't ALE allowed? Is it too good? Too fast to work with? WTF

Very nice idea, but I think the timelimit is too long. Did some 14 high, but my nerves are too bad for this kind of editor-höyling. I guess there won't be too many designer-player combinations, because 95% of the playing will be done in the editor :)

Most of the levels will be rollercoasters, so why not add a rule that hanging is not allowed? That would make the competition not-so-höylish and also driving part would become more important.

This competition idea could also be used in battles or even TT-battles. Fast designing for good styles would be the key.

define certain places that are not allowed to have poloygons above or below them, i.e killers or some apples, making the level harder less rollercoaster

Yea, nice idea, but i didn't notice that point when i made the base lev, and now it's too late. Maybe in the future.
Why the hell isn't ALE allowed?
If ALE would be allowed, then for example vectrast should be allowed, and with vectrast you can do some doubtful things.
Very nice idea, but I think the timelimit is too long.
yep, that's true. But this is first time and ppl don't know the rules and all is new. And the rules are not even ready yet.

I would like to point out that "no start launch allowed" means that there is not allowed any tiny polygons where the start is. Only big polygons near the starting place, so that the bike won't get any initial speed. All suspicious start systems will be disqualified.
Most of the levels will be rollercoasters, so why not add a rule that hanging is not allowed?
Well, hanging is allowed this time. And it's hard to define which is hanging and which is not.

And rez, very nice lev but not very fast to drive :P

Why the hell isn't ALE allowed?
Is it possible to recognize levels built with ALE?
zebra wrote: with vectrast you can do some doubtful things.
Hmm... What things? And if they exists, it could be made using only built-in editor, couldn't it?

nat. that means driving on a roof is hanging. as zebra said it's pretty hard to define, but i'd say hanging is "when the polygon upon which the weight of the bike rests is between the wheel(s) and the head". maybe some flaws in that, i'm too lazy to re-read it :?

"doubtful things"?

Using vectrast (Rad's Levmaker) in this competition would only be stupid. The only thing you could do is to take the FD level + an image and merge them. But it is (almost) impossible to get the image in the right size and with the right proportions to "fit" all the apples, killers etc.

vectrast is a level CREATOR, not a level EDITOR.

Undiente wrote: But a real question: are allowed cooperations in the lvl making?
Well, i think i can't deny co-operation because of course you can send the lev to another designer. But with co-operation, there comes some problem with naming the lev, so it would be better if you could send it only from one designer.

How the hell can you make some 13;xx time 8O

Anyway, i'll try figuring it out sometime...

EDIT : How the hell can you make this time... :x
if you can't
- Put gravity
- Make acceleration rollercoaster ( too thight pipes for the wheels )
- Make a "spring" at the start
- Remove objects

AAAAAAHHHH, it's driving me crazy

wow. i really can't understand how you could have such awesome times =). can't wait to see winner lev and replay..

[edit]

i got bored trying to make a good time, only got around 19½ seconds. but i didn't want my level to go to waste so i polished it a bit and decided to upload it for everyone to see. maybe it'll give some new ideas to the people who are actually getting some good times on the contest, hopefully..

Just back-up the level once you get something ready.

backing up is a necessity anyway if you are really fighting for tenths and stuff, because you have to play the both levels and merge the recs to see which is faster.

actually, if anyone knows: what defines the location of the bike on the level? is it only the relative location of the exit sign or what? because you can move the start object around in internal levels and still have all the polygons and other objects in identical spots (when merging with original internal), but you can also move all the polygons around and the bike stays in same place. basically the only thing that seems to determine the location of the bike is the exit. (am i wrong?)

when you save the level in elma editor it will be moved to the center or something like that. maybe it wont happen if you dont change the outer polygon, or maybe it will.
