Family Guy is a weak Simpsons ripoff with obvious jokes, shitty gimmicks (such as the invariably unfunny flashbacks), terrible one-note characters and an annoyingly cocky overall style. Brian and Stewie are the only saving graces.

The Simpsons used to be great, but now it's been bad for so long now that the amount of bad Simpsons almost outweighs the amount of good Simpsons. They should obviously have quit a long time ago.

Roadrunner? Tom and Jerry? Are you all 10 years old or something? Obviously Simpsons is the best, out of those three.

Yes it is.
ribot wrote:new simpsons episodes are crap because it isn't matt groening doing them any more.
Matt Groening never "did" Simpsons episodes. But it's true that all the new writers are largely to blame for the situation. Most of the old writers have left the show at this point.

All of them except some of the newest ones.
ribot wrote:can you explain how it is a ripoff?
Because every Family Guy plot feels a slightly modified Simpsons plot. Because Peter is just like Homer only less likeable, Lois is just like Marge only even more annoying, Meg is a lot like Lisa only less smart and more pathetic, and Chris is just like Ralph Wiggum (all right, that's a stretch). Because they're basically doing the exact same "dysfunctional family" things as the Simpsons, only they've made all the characters less interesting and more irritating. Certain things, such as the style of the humor, are admittedly different (Family Guy are always going for the more "edgy" and less intelligent jokes), but at its core Family Guy is just the Simpsons with some minor alterations.

Again, Stewie and Brian are good and original characters, and Quagmire also has his moments. But the majority of the show is "Peter is so stupid and Lois never does anything to set him straight and Meg is so unpopular and Chris is so weird". And don't get me started on the fucking terrible, wacky pop-culture references, of which there are about a million in every episode. It gets old so amazingly fast.

i agree that the family initially is a ripoff. dad and mom are basically the same. it's like, hey, let's ripoff simpons and make a family with stupid and crazy dad, lovely accepting mother, two kids and a baby.

but after that, it is not that similar. it's only a ripoff on the surface. of course it looks lame, but it doesnt really matter because the content is what matters. the humour is different. family guy is a lot more bizarre, and more limited to grown-up jokes. simpson have jokes on many more levels, and is very critical to society. family guy is just bizarre ppl.

but maybe you wouldnt disagree then that about every sitcom out there is a ripoff of the previous one. family guy and simpsons are at least worth watching.

i donno what you mean with popcultre references. can you give a couple of exmaples just to explain the concept?

lol, if you don't get the pop culture references, how can you laugh at Family Guy at all? Family Guy consists almost exclusively of them.

Family Guy less intelligent than Simpsons? ROFL. Family Guy is much more controversial, much more adult humour, which to me, is more intelligent. You could argue that Simpsons is more intelligent because it's funny without being dirty. But I would respond with: controversial jokes are more funny by definition anyway. So Family Guy wins.

and i don't see HOW you can say the references get old. They are very original, how could they get old?

I can't help but think that because you guys live in Scandinavian countries you really don't understand it. Or at least you don't understand all of it. Sorry if that's condescending but it's just something I sense, especially with ribot's last question

isnt that the most important?

Yes, I agree that the humor is quite different. I still don't think that changes the fact that Family Guy are trying to do what the Simpsons already did 10 years ago.
ribot wrote:but maybe you wouldnt disagree then that about every sitcom out there is a ripoff of the previous one. family guy and simpsons are at least worth watching.
I don't disagree; every "family" sit-com is very similar to every other "family" sit-com. What The Simpsons managed to do was to present an extremely exaggerated but still fairly realistic view of an average American family, and they also steered away from the constant moralizing and agendas of other shows. Over time the Simpsons has gotten less and less realistic - particularly because Homer has gotten more and more stupid - and Lisa has become more and more of a mouthpiece. But Family Guy never was (or tried to be) realistic to begin with. The characters have never been anything else than vessels for "stupid" jokes, "fat" jokes, etc. I personally hate that, but I can see why people would like the fact that Family guy is just JOKE JOKE JOKE without ever stopping to breathe. Well, I mostly hate it because I hate most of the jokes. Let's just say it's my opinion.

Family Guy is more controversial than the Simpsons? They certainly try hard to be controversial, but they never come off as anything but vulgar to me.
More adult humor? More childish humor, if you ask me. But I see what you mean.
Controversial = Intelligent? I don't see how you arrive at that, but it's just your opinion so whatever.
sierra wrote:and i don't see HOW you can say the references get old. They are very original, how could they get old?
Original? I can see why you would find them funny, but original? I think there's something inherent about those pop-culture references that annoys the hell out of me. There's never anything clever about it. They're basically saying "Hey, remember that funny thing? Wasn't that thing funny! Here's an unnecessary reference to it" It's okay to do that every now and then, but Family guy base their entire show around it. The flashbacks are even worse. It's always always always, "Hey Lois, remember that time I did something stupid?" or something to that effect. I might tolerate the show a bit more if they cut out all the flashbacks and put some effort into the plot instead.
sierra wrote:I can't help but think that because you guys live in Scandinavian countries you really don't understand it. Or at least you don't understand all of it. Sorry if that's condescending but it's just something I sense, especially with ribot's last question
I can see why you would think that, but I really do get most of the references. I just don't like them.

I'm not really getting my point across here. Let's just say that I hate Family Guy and you don't and you shouldn't care what I think.

Edit: Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands.

MagnusB is right in some ways...

It is true that Family Guy has lots of stories that are almost the same as for the Simpsons. For example :

- Marge/Lois being super strong and making the man in bed
- The whole family gets in an Indian Casino
- much more...

But ribot is right that the humor is totally different. The cultural references are just too good and hilarious. For example :

- Peter is the one who brought Charles Manson in the massacre house. ( Sharon Tate ? )
- Stewie told O. J. Simpson to kill his wife...
- Lot more ( http://www.planet-familyguy.com/pfg/episodes.php )

Personnaly, i appreciate more Family Guy because, the jokes are more intelligent and refer to real facts... unlike the simpsons ( very rare )

since sierra nor magnusb understand simple arrogant english, their opinions shouldnt be taken seriously. my question was about the concept of popculture references, not about getting the point of jokes. but apparently they couldnt explain it, nor give examples.

now i will give an example, both to demonstrate how definitions dont create intelligence, and that diversity requires more creativity. simpsons have a concept in it i call the simpson-lure (luring). now sierra and magnusb dont know what it is, so they can't possibly get the humour of simpsons. right?

so. back to topic. simpsons was the first cartoon to be on prime time. so from now on, all cartoons meant for another audience than tom & jerry audience, are rip-offs? more so, i should say, are everything produced by mass media. most news articles are ripped off by other. first the moral perspective is ripped off in order to select what news to publish, secondly the perspective of every article is ripped off to publish the same lie about an event in every news medium.

music, movies, they are all grand rip-offs. everyone has to be good-looking, everyone has to be confident, and so on. in hollywood movies it's taboo to make movies in which every significant part of the story is on the nose OBVOIUS. even the creative process is a rip-off. a good example is the simpson show. you can see in it that there is no subtlety in the jokes in the new episodes. it's as if someone tries to make everything crazy in it, in a simpson conceptual manner. and when you go to a movie school, you are taught to rip-off the creative process that is so widely used nowadays.

but then to this discussion. magnus b and sierra are both ripoffs. i was the first one in elma community to analyze anything to any deeper level than "it rox/suX". so why should mange be so hateful to ripoffs when his attitude is a ripoff of any other sexually repressed intellectual who wastes his talent.

you're arrogant to think i would give a fuck enough to explain what a pop culture reference is

and Magnus, i am really upset that you wish there would be less flashbacks. they are what make the show imo. but, much like bit tit vs. small tit discussions, one can never convince another to change :S
