ancient game of go

Post by onlainari »

MY GO-PROMOTION (for those who don't play the game yet=)

and for those who play, I would like to know how long you have played, and if you have got a rank, and whether you want to play me? :j

teh promo:

You guys tried 'go' ? I never liked chess too much, it's ok. The game is a bit similar, being a strategical board game. The difference is that go-games and moves sometimes comes with instinct, and you don't have to think moves ahead so much the way you think them in chess. Go games usually doesn't take so much time as chess games. But still, Go holds the title of being the most complex and hardest game to master, but it takes only few minutes to learn. The rules are really simple.

Go is the favorite game in eastern-asia having some max over 100 millions go-players, and it is getting more popular in europe too. If you don't try go, you don't know whether you waste your hidden go-skills:P, in fact you are wasting them all the time.

Who knows if you will one day play the 'kami no itte' 'the divine move' 'the hand of god' on a go-board :)

You all should give it a try, and play each other and learn it this way.

You could learn the basics easily here (english) www.playgo.to/interactive (you need java to be installed correctly to see some of the boards you play there) and here on your own language: http://playgo.to/interactive/TOC.html#foreign

And if you want to play games, you could play it in www.aapeli.com or if you want to play on a better system there's many, but this one is famous and needs registration: http://kgs.kiseido.com/

Some nice sayings and thoughts about go you could read from left-frame on http://www.kiseido.com/ From this place you can find a link to 9x9 windows go-game too which is good practice.

So, if you want to learn it, or want me to teach some basics, we can settle a time and then go to some go-server to try it. :) If we get enough newcomers, we could arrange our own rookie go-tournament :)

Playing go is first pretty weird and you don't really get where to play stones, but after some 10 games, you get to remember some shapes and basics and playing gets easier and faster. (There's a saying, lose 100 games as quickly as possible)
Also like I said, you don't need to think ahead so many moves like in chess(the same way), but still engineers and programmers haven't managed to create a go-computer that can beat a 'ok' human go-player.

If you got interested, you can talk to me in ircnet with /msg fuwatto in ircnet, or tell your interest in here.

Some reasons why go is getting popular is the competition of making a go-computer that can beat a human. Another reason is the anime serie Hikaru No Go. (which rox;)

My go..

-I played my first go-game this summer. I didn't get hooked that time. I just played it to see what it's like.

This autumn, early September, when schools started, I have played a game almost every day :D There is this one classmate that has played it more, which I played it with. Also there is another student in my class, that started go the same time I did. So, I didn't really need to play more than about one month, and then I made my own goban(go-board) and bought stones :j

Here's couple pictures of it (after a first test-tutor-game against my little sister) http://students.oamk.fi/~vnaatane/go/go.jpg & http://students.oamk.fi/~vnaatane/go/go1.jpg -The grids doesn't show up that well on my board, because I just drawed it with a normal pencil. (on this 2nd picture, the stones are moved to make it easier tocalculate points on real boards)

Nevertheless, I still go to kiseido to watch professional games(which is max fun too, because in Go, you can read the game quite nicely:) and I also would play it online against elmers too :) Because of my unknown rank status(no online games against any ranked players) I don't know my skill level. I might find it out, after I first manage to beat my classmate who has played this game a bit longer:) (or at least challenge him better).

Another aspect of Go that I didn't bring out yet is that you can play good and fun go-games against different skilled players by simply giving handicap stones to a weaker player, usually 1-9. :o

I got sort of a slight urge to learn go after watching Hikaru, like probably a lot of people do after watching it fully. I never really tried to learn it properly though, I'm very impatient and hate losing, so I figured it wouldn't be in my best interest :P.

Reading your post got me sort of interested again, maybe I'll try and see if I can learn the basics.
