Re: Who plays instruments?
Sounds charming. By the way I tested my new guitar at band practise through some marshall amplifyer, and by jolly, that was great! So happy with the guitar!
Re: Who plays instruments?
cool tijs, now don't go and brake it over a gig

Re: Who plays instruments?
Heah, no way, I'm very careful with my instrument. Imagine by the way, we were jamming tonight, and I had this cute solo tone. Thanks to the amplifier, my guitar, the 3 (!) year old cheap strings notwithstanding. Fucking hell?
Re: Who plays instruments?
ooh fucking hell, can I state one more time in this otherwise dying topic that I'm so happy with this guitar?! I can safely say I have been playing better than ever, an easy tuned guitar with smooth fretboard makes so much difference for your playing experience! I'm so glad I spent my money on this baby and not on some ibanez or someteh.

Re: Who plays instruments?
Glad to hear that you enjoy singing Xiphias So do I.
A little update on my musical front: I gave up the original Putatives (my band I announced a while ago). It's been just me and the bass player for a while now but he wasn't so dedicated so I gave up. Instead, I met up with this drummer who I used to play with when I was like 13 y old (fantastic fucking drummer he is!) and we talked a little and decided to start things again. We're looking for a bass player and a place to rehearse and then we're in business! I will sing and play guitar - things I absolutely love doing.
I'm going to say WHEN and not IF we record something I will probably share it here.
oh and glad to hear you like your new guitar tijs I still gat this electric my dad gave me years ago. But I like it, needs a bit of work now though. Might spend some money on it when I get some.

Re: Who plays instruments?
I used to play very various music with influence of irish, rock etc. Though nowadays with this drummer I play very mixed music where my biggest influence is Nirvana. I guess you can call it Grunge. I really like calm and beautiful songs, but I like to take it up a notch too screaming during the chorus etc. I don't like to tie myself to a genre so I have a very open mind. Things I could never see me play though is things like techno, today's pop (like all these nostory rockbands you see on tv and shit), rap. I think you get the picture.
I also like bands like Aerosmith and Def Leppard. And of course: Beatles.

holy shit, I was playing my song for classroom music with the band (i'm keyboards h0h) and time came for me to solo improv for some ez 12 bars or something. never done it before, so was nervous, but followed my senses, the scale and chords (roughly) for some very nice solo (ofcoarse not superawesome) but i was pleased.
also, after 2 weeks or so I will be recorded playing Bumble Boogie for music extention, so i'll prob youtube for you (if you want to see me shit my pants in front of a crowd )

Re: Who plays instruments?
so, being ignored on my question there, I feel inclined to elaborate on my own scale practise. Well, I don't have a very rigid practise on this. Church modes I learned by using GUITARSCALESMETHOD.EXE (find it on the bitstream). Very simple, you learn 5 grids which overlap, like this:
for example in the upper screenshot, you see the middle grid that's called alpha. The actual composition of all these grids show all the notes in D major (or Ionian for that matter), but when kicking off at II, you have E dorian. Und so weiter. Memorizing these 5 grids makes you confident all over the fretboard (sort of heah), and I usually switch modes when doing random jam.
Further scales? Blues, be it minor/major. The worst I'm lacking is a proper method of melodic minor. I still need a practise on that. And hungarian scales still don't come easy.
On piano, wholescale is fun to play. Start on C.

switching between the Ionian, Dorian, melodic minor, myxolydian, pentatonics and blues scales is nice for a starter =)

Piano: Four Octaves: Two Hands: Similar Motion
Major: B, F#, Eb, Ab
Harmonic Minor: G#, Eb, C, F
Melodic Minor: G#, Eb, C, F
Chromatic (Commencement note): B, F#, Eb, Ab
Two hands: Two Octaves: Contray Motion:
Major: B, F#, Eb, Ab
Harmonic Minor: G#, Eb, C, F
Staccato double sixths: Two Octaves: Two Hands
C Major (Beginning on E & C)
Then 16 arpeggios (guess which ones durrrrrrr)
So some 25 scales (Including chromatics and melodic minor similar motion) for my piano grade 6 exam.
Double Bass: Two Octaves:
Major: E, F, F#, G, Ab, A, Bb, B
Melodic Minor: E, F, F#, G, G#, A, Bb, B
One Octave:
Major: C, C#, D, Eb
Melodic Minor: C, C#, D, Eb
That's Grade 5 bass. So next grade will see me do every scale two octaves.
24 scales for bass. (plus 16 arpeggios)
25 scales for piano. (plus 16 apreggios)

Dame thought I was going to have a look at a place to rehearse with the band today, but I got the date wrong so nobody was there. Apparently it was next week, and I'm gone then so I had to reschedule it. Now I have to wait another 5 weeks to see the place...

Re: Who plays instruments?
lol tj, no way, melodic minors have different lowered and raised tones, the 6th and 7th raised on the way up, and lowered on the way down. btw minor scales are much different than major.

Re: Who plays instruments?
hehe akbot lecturing me on scales =)
Not trying to sound arrogant, but I know some stuff about scales. All I meant is that on the guitar you learn grids, pretty much. That's at least the starting point for me. I don't know how this works on double bass though. And I'm wondering, when they're gonna make their assessment about your on-spot technique, how do they test it? Are you playing with a piano? Are you practising with a sample? It's possible to play a scale in just tune beautifully, while combined with an equal tempered instrument it would sound wrong. Must be annoying if you learn by finger positions then. On the violon a steady use of vibrato is a good fix, but on bass I guess that wouldn't work.
In other words, do you play your pieces different if you transpose it from A flat major to G sharp major?

Re: Who plays instruments?
on double bass, pieces don't have changed fingering for theoretical scales
also, technical things are based on your intenation (how well you are in tune- no frets) if you are using the correct part of the bow (the "balance point") and if your bow hold and note stopping hands are in correct posture. there is no accompaniment, and in an exam situation it really only matters if your strings are in relative tuning to one another, it doesn't have to be perfect pitch.
each scale is played with staccato (four semiquavers per note with one semiquaver per bow) and hooked bowing (dotted quaver + semiquaver per note per bow) and legato (four notes per bow) in order to demonstrate your ability to navigate through uneconomical position changing and retaining a solid tone. It also helps to play with a nice tone.
the only real pattern of the scales on bass is on the G string (for reasons obvious to a bass player)
also, because I am leaning my way around the bass neck more extensively, I can actually play scales with all sorts of weird and wonderful positions inbetween.
Piano scales only retain a mathematical pattern, and fingerings are usually quite different to one another, especially hand positions (take F# major- extremely annoying hand positioning at first try)
sorry if i sound like a douche

Re: Who plays instruments?
Yeah, I have played bass since grade 4 primary school.
In grade 7 I got offered to go to the youth orchestra, but couldn't because of other outside school things i was occupied with.
SmaX, trombone is max, my friend was going for his grade 6 before his teacher dissapeared (quite literally) with his AMEB money.
tj: on the G string, the last 6 notes of the second octave of the scale or so always have the exact same finger pattern, so easier to remember. (I have only learnt about 10 scales and arpeggios exam-worthy atm- though I really could learn the others in a couple of days)

Re: Who plays instruments?
from grade 4? But you must've been a dwarf then, you couldn't have possibly played a bass then.
yesterday, I had a very tiny birthday party, and some neighbours were around, one guy who's the chief of a pop temple in my town, and we had a fun jam with guitar, acoustic, bass and melodica. =)

Re: Who plays instruments?
I did play bass since grade 4. A half size up until high school (I only play a 3/4 now- though the only difference in size to a full is breadth) In grade 7 I was as tall as it. I actually had a german style bow up until high school and the transition to french style was terrible- up until I got a private bass tutor early last year and got it right. I still prefer german, you can play much faster and more agressive IMO.
Re: Who plays instruments?
the only difference between french and german is the shape of the body, right? Like rounded versus err... less rounded.
Re: Who plays instruments?
The difference between German and French bow are mainly that the frog of the bow in the german bow is very large and wide allowing you to "pistol grip" the bow rather than using a weird (though appropriate) hand position like the French bow.
Re: Who plays instruments?
oh, heah, you were talking about the bow. Hihi. Silly me again.
My guitar fell face forward yesterday. This was a great shock for me. I almost got a heart attack so to speak. Luckily, nothing broken. Thank god. How did happen? I got caught in the cable, and while noticing, I still couldn't prevent the guitar from falling while falling myself.
Life is short, and guitars are fragile. I love this one even more for staying together now.

Finally up'd my playing!
Here is my rendition of "Bumble Boogie" I performed for music extention!

I find it comical that I mess up the easy chord parts and whizz through the chromatic runs without a hitch.
Enjoy!

Anyways, not so compareable while the playing of your was liek one of the best pieces you have played / are playing, (is it), and one i linked was from one of the professionals. But, like in elma, always compare to superpros!

I have seen many versions of Cziffra's bumblebee (I even examined the sheet music) and it is an incredible showpiece.
I do like to look up to the pros, and will get to go see Ravel's piano concerto in G soon! (few weeks away)
Anyway, I make sure to pay attention to exact fingerings/timing etc. but ofcoarse i am relatively a beginner on their way to pianism. Not as good as those who can play say fantasie impromptu or even the original of the bumblebee.
I aim to finish grade 6 and 7 piano this year and up to grade 6 double bass so i can audition for the conservatorium.
