Sun taam (Mad detective) (2007) : 9/10 (trailer)
A rookie cop teams up with a former detective with a supernatural gift to hunt down a serial killer. I absolutly loved this movie and strangely, it isn't the intrigue in itself that really caught my attention. The imagery, the characters, the dialogues and the human side of a "crazy" person; all of those were really well rendered on the screen. The ending is also quite complex but it lets some place to interpretation, which i liked. Anyway, i loved this movie and if you want to see something different, pick it up!

Das Leben der Anderen - 8/10
Been having this movie for quite some time and now Ive finally watched it. Really good in every way. Perhaps it was a tiny bit too long, 2h 07m. Recommended nevertheless.

Planet 51 - 6/10

I liked it, watched it with my best ever girl friend and had a very good time. It's funny and Rover is simply awesome. I put only 6, though, because it is a standard animation movie: it is funny, has a straightforward story and likeable characters. But nothing more, not like Toy Story had back in the days, not like Up with so touching moments. Overall, it was very light.

The Jazz Singer - 5/10
Hm... where to begin? Rating this movie is really difficult. I'm split, whether I should put a 5 or a 6 on it. I'm afraid 5 is based on the fact it's a silent movie and therefore it couldn't be worth more (nice prejudgement there) and on the other hand putting a 6 might seem too high and too wannabe-movie-fanatic.

I can honestly say I was surprised how thoroughly entertained I was, even though it was black and white, even though it was silent. The dialogue was told by those oldschool signs with the line in " ", apart from one scene in the middle of the movie which actually had recorded sound dialogue. That one scene improved my opinion about the lead actor, he was great even with sound, the scene even made me laugh. The actress playing his mother in the movie didn't favour from the sound though, pretty crappy acting. I really enjoyed Al Jolson in the leading role, he played the role with great energy and charisma. The songs were sung with sound too btw.

The plot is very basic. It's a story about the complications that occur when your own goals interfere with what is expected from you. In this case the son of a jewish cantor is expected to follow in his father's footsteps and become a 5th generation cantor, but what he really want to do is to become a jazz singer.

All I can say is that this movie is worth at least 5/10.

The Box (2009) - 5/10

The base concept was very nice (though I had heard of it somewhere else): there is a box with a button, if you press the button, somewhere in the world you never met dies, and you earn a whopping $1,000,000. But it was fucked up in a way you're just like "ok...", most scenes were about 30 seconds long and the transition between each of them was always bad, they were very unrelated to each other and you were like "wtf? WTF?". Everything is explained like shit and half of the movie you're like "wtf is going on, honestly".

Oggy is truly awesome

Showgirls - 4/10
Bad acting, boobs, bearable story. 3 B's.

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster - 7/10
Interesting insight in the recording process of St Anger and what was going on around it. The second half I particularly enjoyed, with the Trujillo audition and Lars selling off his paintings and just last bits and pieces falling together with the album. The documentary inspired me in the sense that I too want to be a part of a creative process. Too bad I'm not really interested in music, but maybe I should buy some canvases and oil paint, or perhaps write my own screenplay. Worth the 141 minute watch.

The Lovely Bones - 5/10
A strong 5. It started off quite promising for the first 30-40 minutes or so, then the story started dragging imo. It got quite repetitive and perhaps a bit too poetic (or something). It could have been so much better. The CGI from the land in-between was pretty nice, but at times turned very chickflickish. Well, can't find words to describe what I'm thinking.

Acting was good for the most part. Weisz, Tucci and the girl playing Susie were great. Mark Wahlberg being the weakest link (once again -.- ).

Final words: It's worth a watch despite being a bit chickflickish and 30 minutes too long.

Tonight I'm thinking of seeing Schindler's List. See if orka.

Long time since my last review here, let's make one or two...

The Blind Side (2009): 7.5/10
Well, this is what I call a moving and heart-warming movie. It is nothing complicated but it sure brings all kinds of good emotions in you. As far as acting goes, there is nothing complicated there; all characters are well played. I've had a hard time with Sandra Bullock's southern accent but she was a fun character so it didn't really bother me. All-in-all, a good little movie to warm yourself up, but nothing to jump off your socks.

Ponyo (2008): 9/10
Haha, now that was a good movie! I really have not seen much of Miyazaki's work (except for Spirited Away which was such an intriguing and well-done movie) so i was expecting something weird and fun; which is exactly what i've received. The story is very well constructed and the themes and values of the movie aren't forced in, they simply blend in the mix. I don't know why but an element i truly liked in this movie is the mother-child relationship between Sosuke and his mother, it felt very authentic and beautiful. And of course, the film is visually stunning, and every frame being drawn at hand seems ridiculous to me, especially the scenes happening during the storm, it felt magical! Overall, a light and gorgeous experience.

Have a look at Porco Rosso, Totoro, Howl and Kiki too. They have the same kind of charm over them. Other Ghiblis (Miyazakis) are darker imo. And be sure not to miss Grave of the Fireflies, it's the only Ghibli I have 10/10 on.

Just another average Hollywood production. Brings nothing new. Semifunny scenes once in a while, no lol-scenes. Funniest character was a supporting character. Not really worth the time.

Tricky vote. I put 8/10 at first, then I changed my mind and put 7, but now when writing this I feel like it's worth an 8/10 again. It's a quite hilarious movie at times, even "LOL-funny". Go see it in a crowded theatre!

Nuovo cinema Paradiso - 10/10
Wow, just wow... I've been owning this for several years but have never put some time away to see it - what a blunder. I was overwhelmed by this one. It's a beautiful movie just alone and being not only a projectionist myself but also being able to identify with Salvatore on a more personal level this piece of art became very touching. Whole spectrum of human emotion is getting an exercise while watching this. I'm considering buying this right away. Sick!

i dont want to give them exact marks, but i want to share my opinions
i have watched two interesting movies lately, both with Samuel L. Jackson
one was Coach Carter, a story about him training a basketball team. well, its a movie for youth for sure, not so american though, and Jackson showed up brilliantly once again
the another one was Unbreakable, not so old movie with Jackson and Bruce Willis. Jackson is very sick, insane criminal and collector of comics, while Willis is the exact opposite... very interesting idea, maybe its because i havent watched too many movies in my live, but the idea of this one is very special. very special and original film, worth watching.
a question nau, maybe to John as a maniac :P which are the best and the most worth watching movies featuring Jackson? exclude Star Wars please, i've watched them 1 billion times =D

Don't remember SLJ from Juice :o But then of cuz it's been a while since I saw it, can't remember everything.

Juice is a weird movie. I've seen it multiple times but none of them was planned, it just came on telly. Pretty good movie though (afai can remember).

Speaking of SLJ I got to see the rest of Afro Samurai, only seen 2 eps so far.

Clash of the Titans (2010) - 4/10
Very boring and too linear. There's a start and there's an end, in-between is a linear plot aiming straight towards the end, no ups or downs. Dialogue isn't even slightly interesting. Some coal elements, like a few scenes (like the ferryman) and a few effects. Acting was so-so. I didn't get swept into the CotT world.

well did you expect more? :)
feels the same with all 3D movies released now, they rush to release a movie in 3D just to earn some bucks in the cinemas. dont care to much about the plot or story becouse they know either way people are gonna see it becouse 3D is new and exciting. well still i know that Clash of the Titans is a crap movie, but hey. i still wanna see it!!! guess im one of those morons that still thinks some crap action with some semi-good (or well made?) fighting scenes in 3D is still new and exciting!
